Over 55 years of coaching excellence — hear from the Throws Coaches and Athletes who've trained with Bill and achieved results they never thought possible.
Bill Heikkila has provided a multitude of javelin coaches and athletes with a wealth of knowledge and enthusiastic support for over 5 decades.
As a novice to the intricacies of javelin throwing, Bill’s workshop at York University on February 19, 2000 was a turning point for me as a coach and for every javelin athlete that I worked with afterward.
I already loved throwing and the logic of biomechanics and that workshop still stands out in my mind as one of my most productive professional experiences. Bill’s technical excellence, his knowledge and sequential delivery, the efficiency of his drills, his enthusiasm and his wealth of experience and real world stories were motivational as well as informative. I still remember the excitement I felt that day!
Our Saugeen Track and Field Club javelin athletes have medalled in many High School, Provincial and National Championships and some earned NCAA scholarships and National Team selections. Bill’s mentorship, both formally and privately, have been instrumental in their development and success and their overall love of javelin throwing.
Coaching javelin is still a favourite pastime of mine as well. Thank you, Bill!
As a masters athlete, I thought my best days were behind me. Bill showed me there was still so much room to improve. I set a new personal best at age 52 — something I never imagined was possible.
The video review sessions alone are worth it. Being able to see exactly what I'm doing wrong and getting clear, actionable corrections made all the difference at nationals.
Bill doesn't just coach the throw — he coaches the athlete. His approach to competition prep gave me the mental edge I needed. I went into my biggest meet feeling calm and prepared for the first time.
I started working with Bill as a complete beginner in grade 11. Within two seasons he had me throwing at the provincial level. He breaks down every part of the throw so it actually makes sense.
At 61, I wasn't sure anyone would take my javelin goals seriously. Bill did. His personalized training plan respected my body while still pushing me to improve. I've now medalled at three masters championships.
